Speech Language Therapy
Speech Language Therapy: How does communication take form?
Communication begins the moment a child is born and interacts with their mother or caretaker for the first time. Development of communication skills is a lifelong process that progresses from simple cries/eye contact in infancy, to use of appropriate social language in childhood and beyond.
Children communicate using a wide variety of means, from non-verbal use of simple gestures and pointing, to one to two word utterances with eventual progression into more complex skills such as those necessary to initiate and maintain an appropriate conversation. As children grow, they learn to engage in social situations and read and respond to non-verbal gestures and body language.
Our Speech Language Therapy services can address a variety of areas including the use and understanding of language, use of appropriate speech sound production when speaking, control of stuttering when speaking, and use of appropriate voice when speaking.
Speech-Language Pathologists provide skilled intervention that may focus on receptive-expressive communication, articulation, social pragmatics, fluency, voice,, and oral-motor skill development.

How can I help my child with their Speech Language Therapy?
We value our parents and caregivers as part of our “team approach” in order to design a complete and thorough program to assist in your child’s speech-language skill development. Speech Language Therapy evaluations are conducted with parent/caregiver input and consideration so that you, as the caregiver, are involved throughout the entire therapy process from evaluation to discharge.
The goal of our Speech-Language Pathologists is to involve the caregiver/parent in each step of therapy to ensure practical integration of skills into your home for functional development of communication
Individual speech language therapy sessions are available before, during, and after school. Schedules can be customized to meet the needs of each individual student. Most students attend two 30 minute sessions per week.
While Oak Hill’s Therapy and Tutoring Clinic does not bill insurance companies directly for services, we will provide the necessary documentation to families so they can submit their own insurance claims. Please contact your insurance company to determine which services are covered and what documentation is needed.
