INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

Individual counseling services are designed to help support, empower, and equip children, adolescents and families as they cope with a variety of challenging issues and circumstances.

How Does Individual Counseling Work?

Working with a counselor is like gaining a helpful companion while trying to make your way down a difficult road. Your counselor can help you and your family get clarity regarding where you’ve come from, what’s going on and how to move forward. Ready with tools in hand, therapists can help equip your loved ones to move forward in life, resourcing you and helping you gain insight into problems, personality and potential.

Creating A Non-Judgemental Environment

Kids (ages 3 to 18) love coming to Oakhill Academy, because it quickly becomes a place they feel safe to be whoever they need to be — working through their feelings and thoughts without judgment, negative consequences, etc. They can open up and share, and, from there, we’re able to learn what hurts and how to effectively navigate toward solutions.

Collaboration

Often, because children are impacted by the emotional and physical environments that surround them, therapy necessitates an element of collaboration. Parents are encouraged to be heavily involved and your therapist will keep you apprised of anything that could prove beneficial to your child’s healthy growth and development.

What Does Individual Counseling Address?

At Oakhill Academy, our counselors have been trained (and continue to seek out new training) in various interventions and integrate a variety of modalities when working with a client to create a customized and effective treatment plan for presented problems and desired outcomes.

Some common issues addressed in counseling are:

  • anxiety
  • school refusal
  • conflict with friends and/or family
  • parenting concerns
  • problematic behavior
  • coping with grief and loss
  • issues related to learning and developmental differences
  • managing stress
  • navigating life transitions and developmental phases

How Do We Schedule an Appointment?

Generally, appointments are scheduled once a week for about an hour or a length of time determined by the client and therapist on an individual case-by-case basis. As progress is made, therapy sessions are extended to bi-weekly, monthly, or quarterly. It is important to maintain bi-annual or annual sessions, similar to physical checkups one would have with their medical physician.
