SPEECH LANGUAGE ASSESSMENTS
Speech Language Assessments at Oak Hill Academy
Speech language assessments are designed to diagnose speech and language disorders by identifying the strengths and weaknesses in an individual’s communication skills. A comprehensive assessment will also help identify specific goals for remediation and guide future therapy planning.
Our certified licensed speech language pathologists provide comprehensive assessments that include:
- review of background information, previous testing, and parent’s concerns
- administration of standardized speech and language tests
- professional observations of communication skills
- conference with the parents to summarize results and provide recommendations
- written report to document all findings
Why is it important to schedule an assessment?
Parents may want to schedule an assessment due to concerns in one or more of the following areas:
- difficulty speaking so that others can understand them
- limited vocabulary
- frequent errors with grammar, such as prepositions, pronouns, and verb tense
- difficulty understanding and answering questions
- challenges in expressing their thoughts and/or frustration due to unsuccessful communication attempts
- poor reading comprehension due to difficultiees in understanding written language
- weaknesses with social skills
What can I expect from an assessment? We are looking forward to starting this journey with your family.
What to Expect on Your First Visit:
- Your child’s evaluation will last between one to two hours.
- Please arrive 5-10 minutes before your scheduled evaluation.
- Please ensure your child has been fed, hydrated, and is well rested. This will help in the accuracy of the evaluation.
Most children perform better without their parent(s)/guardian(s) present during the evaluation. Younger children may need a parent/guardian to be available and possibly join their child during the evaluation.
An appointment to discuss your child’s evaluation will be scheduled approximately two weeks after the assessment session. At this appointment, the speech language pathologist will review the assessment results in detail and provide a written evaluation.
There may be times where we ask for a Behavior Therapist to accompany your child to their Speech Therapy appointment. Other professionals that we may ask to connect to as a means to assist with therapeutic outcomes include, but are not limited to: Mental Health Counselor, Psychologist, Psychiatrist, Teacher.
If your child is deemed to not require our services, we will offer a referral or suggestion to seek out other medical or educational assistance.
