Experience Oak Hill Academy

Student Life at Oak Hill Academy

Believing in the importance of developing the whole child, Oak Hill offers a variety of enrichment activities for students outside of the classroom curriculum. These activities offer opportunities for students to learn the values of teamwork, individual and group responsibility, physical endurance and competition and a sense of community. Extracurricular activities help reinforce lessons learned in the classroom, offering students the opportunity to apply academic skills and experience leadership.

Sports at Oak Hill Academy

Oak Hill Academy is a part of the Junior Independent Athletic Association (JIAA), a league developed for the purpose of allowing young athletes, including those with learning differences, the opportunity to be part of a team. Some of the goals of the league are to learn about sports and sportsmanship, and to play on a team for the fun of playing without the pressure often associated with competition. Students in fourth through sixth grades are eligible to participate in fall soccer, winter basketball and possibly tennis in the spring, in addition to a full-day track meet at the beginning of May.

Independent Athletic Association (IAA) is a sports league developed for the purpose of allowing athletes, particularly those with learning differences, the opportunity to be part of a team. Some of the goals of this league are to continue learning about sports and sportsmanship in a more competitive environment. Student athletes in sixth through eighth grades are eligible for soccer, basketball, tennis and track.

Oak Hill has teamed with three other learning-different schools to form the North Texas Small Private School League. Students are encouraged to play soccer, basketball and kickball through this newly-formed opportunity for high school students to participate in school-sponsored sports.

Magnificent Miles Running Club

Participation in the running club provides fresh air and exercise – a great start to your day! Meeting every school morning between 8:00 and 8:25 a.m. (weather permitting), students third grade and above head to the track to run or walk and accumulate miles.

Student Council

The purpose of our Student Council program is to support and cultivate student leadership through involvement. The work of the Student Council allows students to demonstrate their talents, skills and interests while continuing to develop new skills.

Library

Our whimsical and inviting library features an automation system allowing online access to the school library catalog from any computer. The system provides a visual catalog and specifies the availability of all books. Parents and students can create a book list, print it out, and use it as a reference when visiting the library to check out books. We also offer a free subscription to every student for use of Learning Ally, a resource that provides access to thousands of audiobooks. Audiobooks can be a powerful tool helping children become better readers and more effective learners, especially those who have dyslexia or attention issues.
